Marco Vermeulen is trained as an architect and urban planner at Eindhoven University of Technology and founded his own design and research firm in Rotterdam in 1999. As a versatile generalist, he seeks synergy between challenges such as sustainable energy, circular economy, climate adaptation, regional identity, and food production. His studio is often involved in projects that connect climate change with spatial quality and architecture. He integrates contemporary issues at various scales into spatial design or an inspiring vision for the future.
As a critical team player, Marco quickly gets to the core of a project, identifies opportunities, and efficiently guides his team. He was the chief curator of the Landscape Biennale 2021 and presented his vision on plant-based materials during Dutch Design Week 2019 and in VPRO’s Tegenlicht broadcast 'Houtbouwers' (Wood Builders).

ir. Joyce Langezaal
architect en tentoonstellingsontwerper
Joyce Langezaal is trained as an architect at Eindhoven University of Technology. After her studies, she began her career as an exhibition designer at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (now known as Het Nieuwe Instituut), where she worked on numerous exhibitions from 1999 to 2010. Since 2012, Joyce has been associated with Studio Marco Vermeulen, where she develops substantive and spatial concepts.
She has been involved in projects such as ‘(Over)Leven in de Biesbosch’ at the Biesbosch MuseumEiland, ‘De Verborgen Vesting’ in Bergen op Zoom, the exhibition 'IABR_Droogte in de Delta', and the floating park and festival center of the Architecture Month in Rotterdam. Joyce excels at bringing together the right team for these types of projects and steering the energy of all parties in the right direction. Currently, she is developing substantive concepts for new exhibitions at a Deltarium and the Biesbosch MuseumEiland, both of which focus on urgent themes such as climate change and the future of living in the Dutch delta.

Irem Toumay Msc.
architect
Irem is an architect trained at TOBB University of Technology and the Fontys Academy of Architecture and Urbanism (MA+U) in Tilburg. Her work focuses on the relationship between design, sustainability, and emerging spatial challenges. Approaching architecture from a multicultural perspective, she views the discipline as a means to create meaningful and resilient environments. She is particularly interested in how architecture can respond to changing social and ecological conditions through adaptable spaces, sustainable area development, and innovative material applications. In addition, she has a keen interest in museum and exhibition design. By combining research and design, she translates new ideas and technologies into spatial concepts and architectural proposals.

Alexandra Kobeleva Msc.
Landschapsontwerper
Alexandra is a landscape designer with a strong interest in the relationship between urban planning and the landscape. After completing her Bachelor's in Spatial Development at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, she obtained a Master's in Landscape Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. Between studies, she gained experience as a spatial designer. She moves effortlessly between different scales, from regional visions to neighborhood-level elaborations. Her driving force lies in design-based research and the development of future scenarios. The future fascinates her: how will we live, work, and reside tomorrow, how can we prepare our cities and landscapes for future challenges, and what will these living environments look like in the future? Climate adaptation, ecology, and social sustainability are key themes in this regard. In her work, she investigates how the identity and unique qualities of a place can be preserved and strengthened within future developments. By combining design and research, she explores new perspectives on complex spatial issues and translates these into inspiring and feasible visions of the future.

Aart Holtrop Bsc.

Aart is currently halfway through the ‘Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences’ master’s program. Originally from Assen, he previously completed his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture at TU Delft, complemented by a semester at the Graz University of Technology in Austria. He is characterized by a broad curiosity and a strong drive to thoroughly explore a wide range of subjects. This translates directly into his academic and design-oriented approach to architecture: he derives great satisfaction from complex design challenges where the solution is not immediately obvious. During his internship at Studio Marco Vermeulen, he focuses on projects where architecture, urbanism, and landscape converge, maintaining a keen eye for their social and sustainable impact.
Igor Verbeeten

Igor is studying Construction & Design at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and broadened his perspective on space, society, and culture through the ‘(Re)Imagining Port Cities’ minor at TU Delft. With a practical and inquisitive mindset, he approaches design challenges by striking a fine balance between technical expertise, analysis, and imagination. Thanks to his prior practical experience, he is equally at home addressing architectural and urban planning issues. Igor has a strong affinity for bringing concepts to life—whether through the detailed elaboration of complex issues in BIM, the creation of compelling visual representations of plans, or the spatial design of urban layouts. He thrives on multidisciplinary collaboration, combining a structured, hands-on mentality with a keen eye for detail and context.
