FOUR CENTURIES OF MILITARY INUNDATIONS

Region 's-Hertogenbosch

Is there a more beautiful example imaginable for a love-hate relationship than that between the Netherlands and water? Like no other country, the Netherlands has wrested with the sea, the inhabitants have benefited from the fertility and the transport possibilities that water offers and they have feared water. Countless times, and that was the downside, the water devoured Dutch land and made many victims. Even in times of peace, dealing with water is a constant struggle. In no country in the world the ambiguous and close relationship between struggle and water is so important and has for centuries contributed so radically to the formation of the country and the people who live there.

's-Hertogenbosch and its surrounding area have been very frequent battle scenes throughout the centuries, and the water played an important part in this without exception, but what exactly did that role look like? This book, based on years of extensive research, gives us a good insight into the complicated ‘Bossche’ water management in relation to defense and to other struggles in this region. And that no less than four centuries long. This book is undoubtedly pioneering work of great importance which sheds new light on the creation of the landscape around 's-Hertogenbosch and the role of fortresses, rivers and polders in the turbulent military history of this area. It teaches us to understand that history better.

Studio Marco Vermeulen has supported this research by literally adding images to the words. On the basis of historical maps and the archive research done by the Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch, we were able to accurately record how the inundation of the surrounding area came about, which water-related objects were needed for this and the size and the result of the actual inundation. By also designing and illustrating the book, this historical research has come together to form a true public-friendly reference book about the history of 's-Hertogenbosch and its surroundings.

The book can be ordered at the Kring Vrienden van ‘s-Hertogenbosch .
