The train station is a unique place in the city where thousands of travelers, transporters, local residents, and government agencies come together daily. As a hub of diverse networks and a central urban location, it is constantly evolving. To meet these changes, stations will undergo significant transformations in the coming years, both visible and invisible.
ProRail is leveraging new technologies to build and manage stations more sustainably. Think of circular designs, biobased materials, energy-generating systems, and the creation of climate buffers. Additionally, smart applications such as sensors, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology are making stations increasingly intelligent. These developments are advancing rapidly and require forward-thinking. What will the train station of the future look like?

Travel
The first layer accommodates the basic function of the station: traveling. Pedestrians enter the platform via tapis roulants. These escalators are placed exactly on one-fourth and three-fourths of the platform, so that travelers are immediately distributed on the platform. You are provided with information through the multimast (in which facilities such as cameras and WiFi are integrated), dynamic information bars and via your own mobile phone. There are glass walls along the entire length between the platform and the track. Only when the train has arrived do the glass doors in these walls open so that passengers can get on and off. The glass walls ensure that the platform can accommodate more travelers while increasing safety.
Transfer
Switching to other means of transport today is mostly done outside, where there is often not enough space. In the station of the future this function is integrated in the station itself, in the second layer, above the platforms. This layer immediately functions as a roof for the "travel layer". The transfer platform functions as a one-way street for all conceivable modalities. It is a mobility hub and station hall in one that is accessible for taxis, bicycles, segways or pods, which you can also rent or borrow there. You can also quickly get something to eat and via one of the six tapis roulants you can easily go to the platforms from this layer
Meetingplace
The third layer is all about meeting. This health & conference center contains various social functions that add a lot in the heart of the cities above the station. This makes the station a destination in itself. You can visit events here at the conference center and work in one of co-work spaces. You can also recharge in the fitness & health center or take a walk through the inner garden or enjoy the peace in one of the outdoor courts. And you can get some food from the restaurants' reception desks or have a drink on one of the pleasant terraces.
Place to stay
Finally, you can even spend the night at the station of the future. You stay in one of the hotel rooms, in the fourth floor, as high as possible above the platforms and, as far as possible, away from the crowds. The hotel rooms are located around a park-like space. You can also use the running track here. In the middle of this layer is a large glass roof with solar cells and lush vegetation. Naturally, the entire complex is made with sustainable materials, from Cradle 2 Cradle tiles to noise barriers made from elephant grass. The structure is made of solid wood (cross laminated timber) with which the station even has a function in storing CO2. In short, the station of the future combines the practice of today with the best of tomorrow. It is a hub for travel and transfer, but also a sustainable and meaningful destination and place of residence.
