Station of the Future

Smart mobility hub

“The railway station is a special place. It is a place in the city, a junction of several networks where thousands of travelers pass through every day. In the middle of society with which travelers, transporters, local residents and governments are connected and where ProRail works hard every day with its own professionals and partners. The station is constantly changing. (...) Travelers want to switch more comfortably, governments have increasingly ambitious climate plans and the energy transition will also take place at stations. In order to provide an appropriate response to these changes, they stations will again undergo a metamorphosis in the coming years. That is not always visible. Certainly not when it comes to technological changes. New technology enables ProRail to build and manage stations differently. Stations are built with new materials, they are designed circularly, they will become more intelligent through the use of sensors, generate their own energy and form a climate buffer for the environment. These technological changes are going at a very fast pace. Internet of Things, Bio-based economy, blockchain, artificial intelligence, nano technology. Looking ahead is essential.” - Astrid Bunt, Director of ProRail Stations

The station of the future connects people with cities and villages, inside and outside the borders of the Netherlands. The station of the future also connects within the cities. The station is a bustling place where people want to stay. It has become an extension of our working and living environment and an important pivot in our social life.
The station of the future brings peace. The experience and convenience of the customer are paramount in the station of the future. The experience is colored by the entire journey, from "door to door". The station of the future always works. Any
malfunctions have already been resolved before they occur. There are no waiting times, only residence times in an attractive and inspiring environment.
The station of the future is accessible to everyone, for all walks of life, regardless of disability or background. Traveling independently is encouraged because stations offer all the means and facilities for an optimal experience. For example, your phone gives directions through vibration to help you follow the right path. And "included"
Also means that new travel is affordable, always and for everyone.
The station of the future is conscious and circular. It is modular and interchangeable. It knows its position in society and actively contributes to all sorts of social issues. The station inspires visitors and with contemporary social solutions; healthy food, circular healthy materials and clean energy. There is no waste here. And all materials have their own passport. Sustainable choices have been made visible. And so it makes travelers aware.
Traveling is more than moving yourself from A to B. The accessibility is of course enormously important for the experience of traveling. The station of the future therefore goes further than the station itself. Accessibility is optimized through close cooperation with partners. Autonomous cars will pick you up at home and take you directly to the right platform, where your cup of coffee and salad will be served "just in time" and you can continue your journey in the best possible enjoyment.
The station of the future will get a natural character. Green in cities is becoming increasingly important. Plants that generate energy, purify air by binding fine dust to it. Stations become climate adaptive.
The station of the future is actively anticipating the changes that are coming our way. But it doesn't stop there. Within the station, the limits of traveling are constantly being shifted. We challenge travelers and partners to contribute ideas
possibilities and innovation. We apply the latest technologies, materials, products and services to the station. By actually experiencing, we discover together what works and what doesn't.
Security is offered from door to door. As a visitor you always feel safe and welcome. Control is carried out visibly and invisibly. Predictive algorithms help to increase safety. The atmosphere is monitored and
analyzed and the mood of the visitor is strengthened by means of light, sound and scent. Even when you are alone, you do not feel alone or lonely because there is attention for you as a traveler.
The station of the future responds to current needs and to trends and expectations. This is possible because all stations become flexible. They are adaptive, follow the wishes of use and are upgradeable. This closes the station of the
future always meet the wishes of the traveler.
The Station of the Future is above all smart. Optimum use is made of smart technologies that ensure that the travel experience is optimized. Smart apps make the journey clearer. By using sensors, spaces are better utilized and kept clean. Abri's can be moved and seats and benches replaced if they are not used optimally. In the future we have a network of mutually communicating stations.

The first layer accommodates the basic function of the station: traveling. Pedestrians enter the platform via tapis roulants. These escalators are placed exactly on one-fourth and three-fourths of the platform, so that travelers are immediately distributed on the platform. You are provided with information through the multimast (in which facilities such as cameras and WiFi are integrated), dynamic information bars and via your own mobile phone. There are glass walls along the entire length between the platform and the track. Only when the train has arrived do the glass doors in these walls open so that passengers can get on and off. The glass walls ensure that the platform can accommodate more travelers while increasing safety.

Switching to other means of transport today is mostly done outside, where there is often not enough space. In the station of the future this function is integrated in the station itself, in the second layer, above the platforms. This layer immediately functions as a roof for the "travel layer". The transfer platform functions as a one-way street for all conceivable modalities. It is a mobility hub and station hall in one that is accessible for taxis, bicycles, segways or pods, which you can also rent or borrow there. You can also quickly get something to eat and via one of the six tapis roulants you can easily go to the platforms from this layer.

The third layer is all about meeting. This health & conference center contains various social functions that add a lot in the heart of the cities above the station. This makes the station a destination in itself. You can visit events here at the conference center and work in one of co-work spaces. You can also recharge in the fitness & health center or take a walk through the inner garden or enjoy the peace in one of the outdoor courts. And you can get some food from the restaurants' reception desks or have a drink on one of the pleasant terraces.

Finally, you can even spend the night at the station of the future. You stay in one of the hotel rooms, in the fourth floor, as high as possible above the platforms and, as far as possible, away from the crowds. The hotel rooms are located around a park-like space. You can also use the running track here. In the middle of this layer is a large glass roof with solar cells and lush vegetation. Naturally, the entire complex is made with sustainable materials, from Cradle 2 Cradle tiles to noise barriers made from elephant grass. The structure is made of solid wood (cross laminated timber) with which the station even has a function in storing CO2. In short, the station of the future combines the practice of today with the best of tomorrow. It is a hub for travel and transfer, but also a sustainable and meaningful destination and place of residence.
