Parking solution for historic city center
Sixty percent of the buildings in Holland Village in Japan are copies of buildings in Hoorn town centre. The originals, too, are currently being turned into attractions. To maintain the historical illusion, modern reality is being kept to a minimum in the centre. Accordingly, the car is systematically disappearing from the streetscape. At the same time, economics dictate that the centre offer easy vehicular access. These nine designed parking scenes show how romantic parking facilities can enhance the quality of public space in the centre of Hoorn.
1. Buckel Interchange
The empty expanse of the current interchange make it a potential drive-in cinema. Adjustments to the profile of the asphalt make it possible to enjoy a film unobstructed by the surrounding cars. Facilities for skaters enliven the scaly landscape.
2. Underwater parking
Arriving cars dive into the water and enter a two-level parking garage. Drivers and passengers then emerge through a green glow and the scent of glass from the Station Park, which folds down.
A car lift automatically parks unoccupied cars, doing away with the need for turning space and facilitating an efficient height of 1.5 metres per parking level. Exceptions are the double-height levels containing motel rooms.
4. Hoornsche Hop
Extending the existing park over the road ensures unobstructed views for both. Car drivers can take a romantic saunter along the shore, parking their cars right next to the water if desired. But Hoornsche Hop also holds the promise of a sunset stroll or Sunday picnic.
5. Fishermans Route
A road forks into a series of dead-end roadways the terminate in parking places that look back towards Hoorn. This parking area will be used by a new generation of Hoorn fishermen wholl cast their lines while sitting on the bonnet.
6. Leisure Parking
Arranged along the track are a number of deluxe parking spots. Parking here is an aim in itself. The south-westerly orientated timber planks shape a sequence of parking deck, changing room, shower cubicle, diving board and sun terrace. Parking here costs 5 euros an hour.
7. Sandwich Parking
Its street profile clearly favours car and leaves little space for pedestrians. Slotting pairs of parking places over one another means that the sidewalk can be broadened. The roadway is divided into two one-way lanes flanked along their entire length by parking spaces arranged in a fishbone formation.
To relieve congestion in the town centre, the end of Willemsweg spirals skywards to form a parking tower. Visitors can leave their car here in spectacular style. The view across Markermeer Lake and West Friesland widens with each rotation of the tower.
9. Hoorn Ski Jump
Gravity reduced the speed of arriving cars before they are parked on and under this ski jump. The garage extends over the existing school building, creating a panorama deck that offers views of the historical town centre. Upon leaving the garage the cars are disgorged along the side.
